                                                                                                        January 2022

Welcome to 2022: a sure-to-be important year of payments.

Also, a quick welcome to me. My name is Nikesh Lalchandani and I am the new Head of Policy for the Emerging Payments Association Asia. I am taking part of John Ryan’s role as he steps back and focuses on his business, though he remains a strong part of the EPAA family.  My background is a lifetime of payments, including roles across Asia but mostly focused in Australia around the big four.  I have authored a book on banking, payments and cryptocurrency.

So, as we discussed in our Outlook of the Year event last week, many of us see this year as important for payments and an active one for EPAA. First this is the year, hopefully, we come out of the cloud of the pandemic. The pandemic is affecting so many of us in different ways: working from home, shopping online. In payments we are seeing a quantum shift away from cash and towards innovative electronic methods to pay at points of sale, with buy-now-pay-later the tip of the iceberg. Almost every central bank is examining CBDCs, last month we saw a favourable US central bank opinion. The regulatory approach to cryptocurrency is maturing, as we saw repeated this week in India’s budget. Cross-border payment efficiency is reaching a tipping point. As we go through the year, we plan on focussing our efforts on these topics, open data, digital identity and others that emerge.

A thank you to all our members for their energy, I am encouraged by the level of interest, depth and capability of our members in responding to the opportunity to shape policy in the best interests of the community.

Finally, I’m happy to announce this year’s Sage of the Year for 2021 – Andy White. At the start of 2021 he predicted the rise of Digital Identity and the increased regulatory attention on CBDC’s. To see the predictions for 2022, make sure to check out the Outlook of the Year video here.

Co-Created EPA Asia Event for the APAC Payments Industry

Did you know that as a member, you have an opportunity to co-create and host events together with EPAA?

20% of the events we are hosting are on co-created topics that stand alone from the work that is ongoing in projects and workgroups. This is how we provide a broad agenda that covers cutting edge topics outside our focused agenda.

Together with a member, we co-create the framework of the discussion together, we decide on the profile of speakers and the attendee's list. EPAA then makes it happen - we fill the table with the most influential leaders involved in payments to move the discussion on the selected topics.

Our round tables are an opportunity to tell stories, use real-world examples, and draw on lived experiences to make a topic come alive to authentically connect with peers on a deeper level.  This is your opportunity to tell your unique and compelling perspective that can challenge industry norms.

New- PROJECT OPEN DATA

We are ready to launch the new Open Data project in 2022.  This project has an ambitious target to influence the Finance and Economic ministers of APEC, in Thailand, November 2022.

EPAA is hosting an Open Data Workshop in collaboration with Asia-Pacific Financial Forum and ASEAN Bankers Association on 14 February. In this workshop, we are bringing together the full value chain related to Open Data and payments in APAC to discuss how to progress Open Data in the region to benefit all stakeholders and to strengthen the industry. EPAA will present the learnings from the workshop to ABAC on 17 Feb.

The key to success on this project will be:

  • Industry collaboration with global fintechs, via the APAC Fintech Payments Forum.

  • Industry partnership with APEC, ABAC, and ASEAN Bankers Association.

  • Industry workshop at ABAC #1, (the first in person workshop for ABAC & EPA in 2 years)

  • Hot Topic Briefing

  • Monthly Working Group to discuss and plan

  • APEC workshop in Thailand in Q4 2022.

The EPA Director General Policy will be joined by Nilixa Devlukia, ex UK regulator, and open data & digital currency expert.

The time commitment required will be monthly meetings during 2022, which may be dialled up as required.

The benefits of this a project:

  • Helping to move forward a better environment and solution for open data in APAC.

  • Getting access to regional regulators.
